The W240 salted roasted cashew is the classic cocktail snack we keep on the shelf without interruption. The W240 code comes from the international trade nomenclature: "Whole 240" means whole nuts with approximately two hundred and forty per half-kilo. It's a medium-large grade, sought after for shared appetizers because each nut is visible and immediately recognizable.

Ingredients: cashews, vegetable oil, and salt. Three ingredients — the pared-down recipe for a classic salted snack. EU/non-EU origin, like the majority of cashews available on the European market.

What we appreciate about this grade

\n

W240 is the grade that strikes the right balance between visual generosity (nuts that stand out beautifully in a bowl) and reasonable cost. The larger grades — W180 or W210 — are bigger but noticeably more expensive. W320 and smaller grades make less of an impression at cocktail hour.

The roasting carried out by the manufacturer produces a light amber color and a clean, satisfying crunch. The salting is calibrated to stay subtle, so it never masks the naturally creamy, milky flavor of the cashew itself.

The international trade designation W240 (Whole 240) was standardized in the 1980s to bring consistency to global markets. The grades W180 (extra-large), W210, W240 (medium-large), W320 (medium), and W450 (small) cover the bulk of export packaging, primarily from India, Vietnam, and Ivory Coast.

Serving ideas

\n

As an appetizer, served in a shared bowl alongside a cold beer, a dry white wine, or a cocktail. Salted cashews pair particularly well with a Riesling, a Sancerre, or a gin and tonic.

In the kitchen, roughly crushed into a mendiant-style mix — dark melted chocolate, cashews, raisins, and candied ginger — dropped in small rounds onto parchment paper and left to set in the refrigerator.

For a homemade curry, keep a handful of whole cashews to scatter over the finished dish just before serving — the warmth of the curry heats the nuts without softening them, and the saltiness beautifully balances the spices.

For a tropical cocktail platter mix, combine 100 g of W240 salted cashews with 50 g of Golden raisins, 50 g of dried coconut, and 30 g of crushed crystallized ginger. Present in a serving bowl: an original mix that's a welcome change from the standard appetizer spread.

To turn everyday salted cashews into a homemade spiced version: heat 250 g of salted cashews in a skillet for 3 minutes with a teaspoon of ground cumin and half a teaspoon of smoked paprika. Serve warm as an amuse-bouche — a far more complex snack than a plain handful of cashews, and a pleasant shift in aromatic profile.

Vietnam and India remain the two leading international suppliers of shelled cashews for the European market. Commercial sorting quality has improved noticeably in recent years for standard grades like the W240, making it a reliable, consistent benchmark for shared cocktail snacks.

Shipping and storage

\n

500 g bag, available for in-store pickup at our Paris location (58 rue Tiquetonne) or shipped anywhere in France. Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Reseal after opening. Best before date as stated by the manufacturer: twelve months from production, to be confirmed based on the packaging received.

For customers who prefer a larger grade, we carry the W210 version on select listings. The W240 remains the best price-to-presentation value for everyday shared snacking.

The W240 grade is so thoroughly standardized that you'll find it under virtually the same designation with every international supplier. That's the advantage of international trade nomenclature — you know exactly what to expect, regardless of the country of origin. A useful reference point when comparing products across brands.

\n

On the same shelf, we also carry tamari cashews (aged Japanese soy sauce), chili-lime cashews in a Mexican-inspired style, and honey-rosemary glazed cashews. Each variation belongs to its own flavor universe. The roasted salted W240 remains the classic foundation that works for any Western-style cocktail hour.

Frequently asked questions

\n

Is W240 larger or smaller than W320?

\n

Larger. The number indicates how many whole nuts fit in half a kilo — the lower the number, the bigger the nut. W180 is the largest common grade; W320 and W450 are the smallest.

\n

Tree nut allergy?

\n

Cashews are classified as tree nuts for food allergy purposes. Anyone with a tree nut allergy should avoid this product.

\n

Possible traces of other allergens?

\n

The label indicates possible traces of other tree nuts, peanuts, gluten, egg, soy, milk, sesame seeds, and mustard. This is standard for a multi-product facility.

\n

Can they be de-salted?

\n

Not easily. The salt sits on the surface, so rubbing the nuts in a clean kitchen towel will remove some of it — but the result will never compare to an unsalted cashew.

\n

How long will an opened bag keep?

\n

Six to eight weeks in an airtight jar stored in a dry place, with no loss of crunch. Beyond that, the cashews gradually soften.

\n

Suitable for people with high blood pressure?

\n

Salted cashews contain added sodium. Consumption should be limited for anyone following a low-sodium diet. For unrestricted snacking, opt for dry-roasted unsalted cashews or raw cashews — the sodium contribution is significantly lower.
