Shelled Brazil nuts — dried fruit | G. Detou Paris

Despite its name, the Brazil nut is actually sourced predominantly from Bolivia — the world's leading exporter. The tree, Bertholletia excelsa, grows wild in the Amazon rainforest and produces large woody pods, each containing around twenty nuts.

Bolivian origin confirmed on the producer label. 500 g bag — ideal for sharing at aperitif or for modest workshop use. The Brazil nut is instantly recognizable by its elongated shape, firm and crunchy texture, and fresh, lightly sweet flavor.

Why this nut

The Brazil nut is renowned for its exceptional selenium content — a trace mineral that very few foods deliver at this concentration. Just two nuts a day is enough to meet an adult's daily requirement. It's a compelling nutritional argument for customers looking to boost their intake of trace minerals.

In terms of flavor, it's far less common than almonds or cashews — which is precisely what makes it so interesting on an aperitif board. Its aroma is more pronounced than a cashew's, and fresher than a classic walnut.

Brazil nuts are harvested exclusively from wild Amazon rainforest — the trees simply cannot be cultivated on plantations. Pollination depends on specific bee species that exist only in old-growth forest. This deep reliance on a forest ecosystem means the Brazil nut is intrinsically tied to the preservation of the Amazon.

Serving ideas

At aperitif, serve as-is or lightly toasted — seven minutes at 160 °C to awaken the aromas. They pair beautifully with white port, a natural sweet wine such as muscat, or an aged rum cocktail.

In salads, roughly chopped over arugula with parmesan and lemon, they bring an aromatic crunch that's a welcome change from the usual almonds or walnuts. Their fresh flavor works particularly well with peppery greens like arugula or watercress.

In baking, use them roughly chopped in brownies to replace some or all of the walnuts — they lend a lightness on the palate that shifts the cake's textural profile.

For an original green pesto, replace the traditional pine nuts with 50 g of roughly chopped Brazil nuts, then blend with basil, garlic, parmesan, and olive oil. The texture differs from a classic Genoese pesto, but the fresh flavor of the Brazil nut makes for an interesting variation — and a more affordable one at that.

The Brazil nut harvest takes place during the Amazonian rainy season — the pods fall naturally from the trees and are gathered from the forest floor by the castanheiros, local collectors. It's physically demanding and genuinely dangerous work (2 kg pods dropping from 30 meters can cause serious injury), which goes some way toward explaining the price.

For targeted nutritional use, two to three Brazil nuts a day is sufficient to cover daily selenium requirements. That's the key point worth sharing with customers who want to enrich their diet with trace minerals without overhauling their daily habits.

Storage and delivery

500 g bag, available for in-store pickup in Paris or shipped anywhere in France. Store in a cool, dry place. Once opened, transfer to an airtight jar. Brazil nuts are rich in polyunsaturated oils and can turn rancid if exposed to heat — an airtight jar kept somewhere cool is strongly recommended.

For nutrition-minded customers who consume them daily for selenium, we recommend no more than 4–5 nuts per day. At that pace, the 500 g bag will comfortably last several months.

The ecological dimension of the Brazil nut tree is central to its story: it is one of the rare Amazonian forest products whose commercial value directly supports the preservation of old-growth forest. Consuming it mindfully contributes indirectly to maintaining the Amazon ecosystem — a point worth raising with customers who care about these issues.

Frequently asked questions

Why the name "Brazil" if it comes from Bolivia?

A 19th-century commercial name, based on export routes through Brazilian ports. Today, production is spread across Bolivia (the leading exporter), Brazil, and Peru.

Is two nuts a day for selenium accurate?

It's a widely cited nutritional guideline. Selenium content does vary by soil, but a single average Brazil nut typically exceeds the recommended daily intake. Avoid consuming more than four to five per day to prevent excess.

Suitable for people with allergies?

Brazil nuts are a tree nut — a major allergen. Strictly avoid if you have a tree nut allergy.

How to preserve the aromas after opening?

Six to eight weeks in an airtight jar kept dry. Three to four months in the refrigerator. Higher in oils than most other nuts, they go rancid more quickly.

Can they be toasted?

Yes, lightly: seven minutes at 160 °C. Beyond that, they begin to brown and lose their fresh aromatic character.

Is an organic option available for this product?

It's complicated — Brazil nuts are harvested from wild forest, outside areas that can be formally certified organic in the strict sense. "Forest grown" or fair-trade certifications exist and are generally more meaningful for this type of product. Ask in-store for currently available references.
